Response to ministerial statement

22 July 2004

In a ministerial statement on 22 July 2004 the culture secretary, Tessa Jowell, made an announcement on the progress of digital switchover. The statement called on the Consumer Panel to consider what measures might be necessary to ensure that the interests of the most vulnerable consumers are protected. The Panel has been asked to report later this year with its advice.

In response to the statement Colette Bowe, Consumer Panel Chairman, said:

"Digital switchover has the potential to deliver real benefits to individual consumers. The Panel will work closely with consumer groups, community groups and industry to ensure that the route to switchover is managed in a way that reduces to a minimum the risk of disadvantage to the most vulnerable in society."
